
The University of Colombo has been ranked as the top institution in Sri Lanka, placed in the 1,001-1,200 range in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. With an impressive overall score of 60.8, it leads Sri Lankan universities, standing out for its excellence across various academic parameters.
Following closely is the University of Peradeniya, ranked between 1,201 and 1,500 globally with a score of 56.8. Sri Lanka’s other leading institutions, such as the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ), have been ranked beyond 1,500 globally. USJ, tied for third place in the country, has shown notable improvements from the 2024 rankings.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are considered one of the most comprehensive and respected ranking systems, evaluating universities based on 13 performance indicators across teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. For the 2024 rankings, 1,907 universities from 108 countries were evaluated, with prestigious institutions like Oxford, Stanford, and MIT claiming the top positions globally.
While Sri Lankan universities are ranked above 1,000 globally, they are actively improving their academic, research, and international standings, marking their growing significance on the world stage.
