Suraksha Scheme protects over 4 million schoolchildren under Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation – Education Ministry partnership

Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Ltd (SLICGL) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s youth through its ongoing partnership with the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education to deliver the state-funded Suraksha Student Insurance Scheme.

The initiative provides free insurance coverage to over four million schoolchildren nationwide, protecting students aged 5 to 21 in Grades 1 through 13 across government schools, government approved private schools and Pirivenas, as well as students aged 4 to 21 in assisted special schools. Designed as a financial safety net against unforeseen events, the policy applies to incidents occurring both on and off school premises.

The Suraksha scheme offers comprehensive benefits, including hospitalisation, outpatient care, critical illness coverage and personal accident benefits for permanent or temporary disability. Additionally, it includes a life insurance benefit for students from low income families in the event of a parent’s death, helping prevent economic hardship from disrupting a child’s education. The coverage is accessible islandwide through SLICGL’s network of 200 branches and customer service centers.

To mark Children’s Day, SLICGL also extended direct support toward the educational needs of students at an underprivileged school. As the national insurer, SLICGL highlighted that its mandate extends beyond risk management to fostering a supportive learning environment, ensuring children can pursue their education with stability and confidence throughout their school years.
