PM Says Grade 6 Reform Modules Not Withdrawn, Reforms to Begin in 2027

Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya said Tuesday that none of the modules introduced for Grade 6 under Sri Lanka’s proposed education reforms have been withdrawn.

Speaking in Parliament in response to a question raised by opposition member, Nalin Bandara, the prime minister said the government plans to implement the Grade 6 reforms in 2027.

“Only the modules for the first term of Grade 6 have been printed. None of them has been rejected or removed,” the Prime Minister said. “These modules will be utilized when implementation begins. No decision has been taken at this time to remove them or to act in a manner that incurs a loss.”

She also said the distribution of Grade 6 textbooks that had been printed and stored in warehouses has already begun, adding that the government expects to complete distribution by mid-February.

PM stated that teachers have already commenced classroom instruction and are continuing lessons under the existing syllabus, as the new curriculum has not yet come into effect.
