PM outlines comprehensive national vision for child safety, education

According to Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, World Children’s Day serves as a vital reminder to ensure a safe and secure world for children year round, rather than being confined to a single day. Speaking at the 2026 World Children’s Day celebration organized by the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council and the Independent Television Network (ITN) under the theme Mahangu Sampatha- Daruwan Surakimu on October 3, the Prime Minister emphasized that every child in the country is important and that all government initiatives are aimed at their well being.

Highlighting the role of education in shaping responsible citizens, the Prime Minister announced that the government has placed special emphasis on the sector, with a new curriculum set to be introduced for Grades 2 and 6 in 2027.

She further stated that steps are being taken to systematically develop school infrastructure and digital facilities, including ensuring digital connectivity in all secondary schools across the country by the end of this year while promoting safe digital technology use.

To protect children during their daily commutes, Dr. Amarasuriya noted that the government is collaborating with the Transport Ministry to establish minimum safety requirements for school transport services through new standards, laws, regulations and guidelines.

Additionally, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of health, food security, healthcare and school meals. She also called for fostering a sports culture in schools where children can play freely, emphasizing that it is the government’s responsibility to provide the necessary infrastructure and safe environment to support it.
