Gateway College Empowers Thousands of Students Through Global “Hour of AI” Initiative

Gateway College has successfully concluded its Hour of AI programme across all its campuses, reaffirming its commitment to preparing students for an AI-driven future. Held over several weeks, the initiative engaged students from Year 1 to Year 12 in age-appropriate, hands on artificial intelligence learning experiences as part of the College’s AI Roadmap for 2025–2026.The initiative is believed to be the first of its kind in Sri Lanka.

The Hour of AI is a global initiative led by Code.org and CS for ALL that builds on the success of the Hour of Code movement to make AI education accessible to all learners. Through carefully selected activities, Gateway students explored AI concepts through interactive games and storytelling for younger learners to machine learning, generative AI, responsible AI use, and real world applications for older students. The activities were integrated into regular ICT and Computer Science lessons for Years 1–11, while Year 12 students participated through the school’s VSAK (Values, Skills, Attitude and Knowledge) programme.

The initiative was spearheaded by the Change Management Team Leader and Coordinators in collaboration with ICT and Computer Science teachers across all Gateway campuses, ensuring every student had the opportunity to experience AI in a meaningful and engaging way.

As AI continues to transform every aspect of modern life, Gateway College believes that AI literacy is becoming as essential as digital literacy. By helping students understand how AI works, think critically about its impact, and use it ethically and creatively, the school is equipping the next generation to become not only confident users of AI, but thoughtful innovators who will help shape the future. This commitment to innovation has seen Gateway College recognised as a Microsoft Showcase School for nine consecutive years, an honour awarded to schools worldwide that demonstrate excellence in transforming teaching and learning through technology. The successful implementation of the ‘Hour of AI’ programme is another milestone in Gateway College’s ongoing mission to provide students with a future ready education.
