Founded on February 10, 1967, under the visionary leadership of Mr I.M.R.A. Iriyagolla and the beloved founding principal, Mr R.I.T. Alles, D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo, marked a distinctive milestone in the field of education within a remarkably short period. Established from its inception as a multi-ethnic school, Senanayake College succeeded in cultivating a sub-culture entirely unique to itself.

As defined by the late Mr Alles, the Principal and the staff constitute one of the four great pillars that uphold “Mother Senanayake.” In particular, the medical clinic organised by the Old Boys’ Association (OBA) for the well-being of our retired teachers, the mothers and fathers of our education, stands as a testament to the eternal bond between students and their mentors.

This noble cause, which now boasts a proud 20-year history, was initiated on February 18, 2006, by the dedicated alumni of the ’88 Group. What began as a small-scale effort has evolved into a monumental project. Although securing financial resources for medicine and equipment was challenging in the early days, the unbreakable bond and unity of the “Senanayake Sons” shattered every barrier. Numerous alumni who walked these halls and later entered the medical profession have never hesitated to contribute their expertise to this cause.

Developed stage by stage, this medical clinic operation has now reached an exceptionally high standard. The alumni group has demonstrated immense humanity, even delivering medicine directly to the doorsteps of retired teachers who are too frail or ill to attend the clinic in person. To those beloved teachers spending the sunset of their lives in solitude, Dr Thushara Gunathilaka and the entire ’88 Group have proven themselves to be humanitarians in the truest sense of the word.

The ’88 Batch of D.S. Senanayake College hosted a special commemorative ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of their monthly medical clinic, dedicated to the health and well-being of retired teachers.

The event was held on March 24, 2026, at the R.I.T. Alles Auditorium within the school premises.

To honour two decades of service, the Department of Posts, Sri Lanka, officially issued a special commemorative stamp, a first-day cover, and a commemorative coin.

The ceremony was graced by Professor Aloka Pathirana and Professor Ajith Malalasekera as the guests of honour.
