Education Ministry to Open Sports Schools in Every Province and District

The Education Ministry is launching a new multi million rupee project focused on physical education and student health. As part of this plan, new sports schools will be established or upgraded in every province and district.

These sports schools will be fully equipped with modern facilities for professional training. Students with special talent in sports will be identified from regular schools and given the opportunity to continue their education while receiving expert sports training.

Deputy Minister of Education, Madhura Seneviratne, said that a special selection process will be introduced to find young talent early. Students will be selected from Grade 6 and above. The goal is to develop the athletic skills of students and prepare them for national and international competitions.

The ministry will also look after the students’ nutrition to make sure they are healthy and strong during their training. To meet the need for qualified teachers, graduates from Kelaniya University and Sabaragamuwa University will be hired as sports instructors.

In addition, the subjects of Physical Education and Health will be added to the regular school curriculum, helping to promote a healthier lifestyle among all students.

The Deputy Minister said that this project will create a strong foundation to develop future sports champions for Sri Lanka, with full government support.
