
Prime Minister and Minister of Education Harini Amarasuriya made an on-the-ground visit to some of the severely impacted schools to personally evaluate the extent of damage inflicted on educational facilities following the recent severe weather events.
The Minister visited Pasarai Uri Tamil Primary School, Negahakiwula National School, Welimada Muslim National School, Katawaththa Giant Spring pre school and Meegahakivula National School in the Badulla District last week.
During the visit, Minister Amarasuriya met with local school officials, community leaders and education officers to gain a clearer understanding of how schools and related infrastructure have been affected. The assessment was aimed at gathering firsthand information to inform the Education Ministry’s response and recovery strategies for the district’s schools.
Officials noted that several schools experienced disruptions, with some facilities requiring repair before students and staff can safely return. The Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to prioritising repairs and ensuring minimal disruption to students’ learning.
The visit also served as an opportunity to coordinate with local authorities on immediate relief measures and longer-term rehabilitation plans to restore normal educational activities across the affected region.
