Chevening Scholarships : Update from British HC

The British High Commission in Sri Lanka has announced that the applications for the prestigious Chevening Scholarships to study in the United Kingdom (UK) will close on 7 October 2025 at 12:00 UTC.

Before applying, candidates are strongly encouraged to review the guidance at chevening.org/guidance and assess their readiness to submit a competitive application.

Key updates have been made to the eligibility criteria, notably, only work experience gained after the date of graduation will be counted for the two-year (equivalent to 2800 hours) work experience requirement.

The application window is shortened to 02 months, and the application questions have been changed to reflect how candidates’ choice of course and university connects to key global priority areas.

The Chevening Scholarship programme offers fully funded one-year master’s degrees at UK universities to individuals who are ready to lead positive change in their home countries and around the world.

For more than 40 years, Chevening has attracted hundreds of thousands of applications globally. In Sri Lanka, Chevening alumni form a vibrant, four-decade-strong community of changemakers from diverse backgrounds and professions. Many have gone on to become influential leaders in their fields.

Successful applicants are individuals who can compellingly demonstrate exceptional leadership, influence, and networking skills, supported by clear, evidence-based examples.

Emma Hennessey, Head of The Scholarships Unit at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), said: “Chevening’s highly competitive selection process ensures that those chosen to become Chevening Scholars or Fellows represent the brightest and most driven individuals from around the world.

“Chevening Alumni use their world-class education, global networks, and confidence gained in the UK to create meaningful, lasting change when they return home, whether by tackling global challenges or making a tangible impact in their own communities.

“If you can clearly demonstrate the skills needed to join them – outstanding leadership, influence, and networking skills – I strongly encourage you to apply. If you’re not quite there yet, I encourage you to take the time to build the experience that will make your application competitive.

“I’m continually inspired by the dedication and drive of the Chevening community, and I look forward to seeing what the next generation of leaders will bring.” Prospective candidates can apply via chevening.org/apply.

Since its launch in 1983, more than 60,000 professionals from diverse backgrounds have advanced their careers through Chevening, underscoring the UK’s commitment to developing the leaders of tomorrow. Your story could be the next to inspire others.
