Three exceptional students from Gateway College Dehiwala have been selected to represent Sri Lanka at the International Economics Olympiad (IEO) 2025, scheduled to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from 20th to 25th July 2025. This remarkable achievement places them among the top young economists in the country and marks a proud moment for the school community.
The International Economics Olympiad is a prestigious global competition that brings together the most talented high school students from over 50 countries to compete in the fields of economics, business, and finance. The Olympiad challenges students to apply economic theory to real-world scenarios through a series of demanding assessments, including multiple-choice questions, data analysis, and case studies. Participants are also tested on their entrepreneurial thinking and financial literacy in both individual and team-based formats.
Participants were selected through a highly competitive national screening process organised by the Sri Lanka Economics Association, which included rigorous written assessments and interviews designed to evaluate analytical reasoning, economic insight, and problem solving capabilities. The selection of the 3 students is a reflection of their academic excellence, creativity, and dedication to the subject, as well as the strong foundation laid by their teachers at Gateway College.
Last year, Joshua Almeida and Vakesh Shantharuban, also from Gateway College Dehiwala, represented Sri Lanka at the same prestigious competition.
