Significant changes are set for Sri Lanka’s school curriculum from 2027, including reducing the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination to seven core subjects such as History and Aesthetic Studies and integrating vocational education directly into Grades 10 and 11.

​The updates were detailed during a meeting of the Subcommittee on Education Reforms held at Parliament on September 9, chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

​The sweeping general education reforms will also introduce modules on social cohesion, law and ethics for Grades 12 and 13.

​Implementation is already underway for lower grades. Activity books, teacher guides and instructional modules for Grades 2 and 6 have been completed, with corresponding teacher training programmes currently in progress. Officials announced that a public awareness campaign on the nationwide changes will launch shortly.

​Alongside school curriculum changes, the subcommittee reviewed progress on a new National Preschool Education Policy designed to formalize early childhood education. Frameworks are currently being established for preschool registration, standardized curricula, teacher guides, and specialized educator training.

​The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Hon. Dr. Madura Seneviratne, along with parliamentarians and senior education officials. (Eduwire)
