Gonsalvez College, Bolawatta, in the Wennappuwa Education Division of the Chilaw Region, created history by winning 3rd place at the All Island Western Music & Dance Competition 2025 in the Mixed Instrumental (Category A2). The competition was organized by the Aesthetic Branch of the Ministry of Education.

This victory is extra special because the students do not learn Western Music as a formal subject. Instead, they were guided and trained by their Sinhala Language teacher, Mr. Suneth Jayasanka, who went beyond his regular duties to help the students achieve success at national level.

At the North Western Provincial Competition, the college also earned several victories:

  • 2nd place in Melodica Group (Senior Boys)
  • 3rd place in Melodica Group (Junior Girls)
  • 3rd place in Chamber Group (Open)
  • 4th place by Miss Lasandi Nimduni in Recorder Solo (Junior)

In the past years too, Gonsalvez College has shown great talent. In 2022 and 2023, the school won six All Island 1st places in different categories, proving the dedication and creativity of its students.

These achievements were made possible because of the guidance of teachers like Mr. Suneth Jayasanka and the constant encouragement from the Principal, Mr. Geeth Fernando, who always supported the students even with limited facilities. Their teamwork with the children shows the power of dedication, motivation, and belief.

The story of Gonsalvez College is an inspiration for all schools in Sri Lanka showing that with the right guidance and encouragement, students can shine even without big resources.
